The Story Of The Tseshaht Market

The Tseshaht Market has seen many changes since it started in 1979. The original store, which began operating in June of 1979, consisted of only two gas pumps and burned to the ground in August of that same year.

The second store built on the existing site opened January, 1981. This re-built store served the community for the past years with few modifications. With the on-set of the new millennium, it became apparent that some major upgrades were long over due to bring the Market abreast with today's customer needs.

Through the combined efforts of FINESS (First Nation Emergency Services Society), NEDC (Nuu-Cha-Nulth Economic Development Corporation), and the Tseshaht membership/Chief and Council, the gas service and store upgrade started spring 2000. Some pretty major changes occurred within and outside the store - the most noticeable being the switch from Husky Oil Marketing to Tempo, an independent arm of Federated Co-Operative.

Our gas bar was closed from June 12th to July 28th of 2000, to accommodate the installation of new above ground gas tanks and new service pumps. The store however remained open for service.

Petco Industries, a crew based in Prince George, did the work preparing and installing the site. Many other contractors are to be commended for their hard work in getting the Market up and running again as quickly as possible. Thanks to Les Sam Construction, Braker Electric, Black Eagle Contracting, Larry McLean Plumbing, Morrow Engineering (on site) and Bullock Baur Engineering (consulting).

Even in the midst of extensive renovations & contruction chaos, our staff continued to provide all our customers with smiles and friendly service. At the same, our customers have remained incredibly patient, understanding and supportive. On July 15th and 16th, 2000, the Tseshaht Market combined our grand re-opening with a customer appreciation weekend.

Since our grand re-opening in 2000, the Tseshaht Market continues to be a full service station. We now offer propane bottle fuel, auto propane, diesel and marine (marked) gas as well as unleaded regular, mid-grade and premium gasoline. Come in and enjoy having your vehicle fueled, fluid levels checked and windows washed at any time during business hours (7:00am - 10:30pm daily).
