Colville was the original name for the city of Nanaimo. Historically,
it was united in 1874, making Nanaimo the third oldest city on
Vancouver Island.
Tourism,
smaller industries, six deep-water docks, forestry and deep-sea fishing
are all contributors to promoting Nanaimos' development. Nanaimo has
many guided aquatic adventures to offer such as sea-kayaking, sailing,
whale-watching, diving and cruises.
Nanaimo has numerous parks
to visit within its 2,7000 acres of parkland and whether your chosen
activity is hiking or having a picnic, the scenery is breathtaking. Try
Beban or Bowen Park for a peaceful walk through their gardens or a swim
at the recreation centers. Looking for some excitement? Try Nanaimo's
Bundy Zone and Vancouver Island Paint Ball or visit the Great Canadian
Casino.
The Nanaimo Art Gallery, located on Malaspina
University-College Campus is only one of the galleries that Nanaimo has
to view. The city is also home to the Vancouver Island Military Museum
and also has its own District Museum.
Nanaimo has over five
shopping centers throughout the city and has many restaurants, clubs,
and bars for you to choose from. The possibilities for recreation,
adventures, fun, and entertainment are endless in Nanaimo, but you have
to visit to find out just how endless.
