As you travel along Highway #4, along your way to the West Coast, you
will pass through the town of Port Alberni which is considered to be
the Gateway to the Pacific Rim. Port Alberni, also known as the Alberni
Valley, is situated at the mouth of the Somass River and extends along
the ridges of the Alberni Inlet.
People
from around the world travel to Port Alberni in hopes to collect the
cash prize for catching the largest salmon during the Salmon Festival.
The evidence is clear, this town is truly the Salmon Capital of the
World.
Although the logging industry has supported the town for
decades, in recent years, the town has looked towards tourism to
attract more visitors.
